Initially one of 7 programmes offered in the Faculty of Applied Science, Diploma in Environmental Health was the starting point in which the Department of Environmental Health and Safety was formed. With a modest first batch consisting of 10 students and 5 faculty members, this programme produced Diploma graduates in the field of Environmental Health, many of whom later began working as an Assistant Environmental Health Officer in both the private and government sector.
The success of the Diploma programme and the growing number of students reflected the need of the country in the field of health and safety. Therefore, in a move that aims towards the improvement of the health and safety sector in Malaysia, the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Environmental Health and Safety was offered to both the Diploma graduates and graduates of matriculations centres.
The department has also been accredited and acknowledged by various local and international organizations such as Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA), Malaysian Association of Environmental Health (MAEH) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). This acknowledgement from the professional bodies reflects the value of its graduates. Upon graduation, graduates of the department will have become skilled in environmental monitoring, health promotion, risk assessment, risk management, emergency preparedness, management systems and industrial hygiene, all of which are skills needed for Environment, Safety and Health professionals in the industry.
