The Centre for Environmental Health and Safety Studies is delighted to host this year's FSK Health Sciences Summer Camp for Teesside University students. One of the camp's highlights was the "Heritage and Cultural Excursion to Kuantan and Sungai Lembing" from 5-8 July 2024.
ย
Day 1 kicked off with a visit to the scenic Teluk Cempedak beach, followed by an engaging evening at Cempaka Beach, where students participated in net fishing, beach games and interacted with the local community.
ย
Day 2 was packed with impactful activities during the Gotong-Royong Mega Perangi Aedes & One Hour Malaysia Cleanup, in conjunction with Program Madani Rakyat Zon Timur 2024 at RRM Permatang Badak, Kuantan. The program was officiated by YBhg. Datuk Dr. Rusdi bin Abd. Rahman, Director of Health for Pahang. Alongside local leaders, NGOs, and volunteers, they signed a ceremonial banner to demonstrate their commitment to the National Agenda for a Healthy Malaysia (ANMS) Fourth Pillar: Cultivating a culture of environmental cleanliness for the well-being of the people.
The students also visited Tenun Pahang Diraja, where they learned about the traditional craft of royal weaving and admired the intricate designs that reflect Malaysia's rich cultural heritage. Another highlight was the visit to the International Kite Festival at Pantai Sepat Kuantan, where they witnessed vibrant kites of all shapes and sizes and enjoying the festive atmosphere.
The third day began with a sunrise trek up Sunrise Hill offered breathtaking views of Kuantan's landscape, leaving everyone in awe of nature's beauty. The adventure continued with a refreshing visit to the Sungai Jin waterfall, where students enjoyed the serene environment and cool waters.
ย
Additionally, the camp featured a special malaria activity with the Orang Asli community at Bukit Bakong. Students participated in health education sessions, learned about the communityโ€™s efforts in combating malaria, and conducted Blood Film for Malaria Parasite (BFMP) tests. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into environmental health practices in rural settings.
It has been an incredible month of learning, cultural exchange, and unforgettable experiences for our Teesside University students. Thank you to the environmental health team of Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Kuantan and the Malaysian Association of Environmental Health for the massive support.
Thank you to everyone who made this summer camp a success!
